When a garage door breaks, the first question most homeowners ask is whether it is worth fixing. Sometimes a repair is the clear answer. Other times, putting more money into an old door only delays a replacement. Here is how to think it through.
When repair makes sense
- One broken part. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges and openers are all designed to be replaced. A door with one failed part is usually a repair.
- A single damaged panel. If one section is dented and the matching panel is still available, it can often be replaced on its own.
- The door is less than 15 years old and otherwise runs smoothly.
- Noise or slow movement. These are usually fixed with new rollers, lubrication and an adjustment.
When replacement is the better investment
- Several damaged panels, or panels that are rusted through, cracked or warped.
- Repeated repairs. If you have paid for two or three repairs in a couple of years, the money is better spent on a new door.
- An old, uninsulated door on an attached garage. In Houston heat, an insulated door can make the garage and the rooms next to it noticeably more comfortable.
- Safety concerns. Very old doors and openers may lack modern safety features like photo-eye sensors and auto-reverse.
- Curb appeal. The garage door can cover a large part of the front of your house. A new door is one of the most visible upgrades you can make before selling.
What to ask your technician
A good technician should explain what failed, why, and what it costs to fix versus replace. Ask how old the springs and opener are, whether the panels can be matched, and whether the track and hardware are in good shape. If the door is worth repairing, they should tell you so.
