If your opener is old, loud or unreliable, a new one can make a big difference in how your garage door works every day. Here is a plain-English comparison of the main types.
Chain drive
A metal chain pulls the door along a rail. Chain drives are strong, durable and usually the most budget-friendly. Their main downside is noise and vibration, which matters if there is a bedroom above or next to the garage.
Belt drive
Works like a chain drive but uses a reinforced rubber belt. Belt drives are much quieter and smoother, which is why they are the most popular choice for attached garages. They cost a bit more than chain drives.
Screw drive
A threaded steel rod moves the door. Screw drives have fewer moving parts but can be sensitive to big temperature swings and need periodic lubrication.
Wall-mount (jackshaft)
Mounted on the wall next to the door instead of the ceiling, a wall-mount opener turns the torsion bar directly. It frees up ceiling space for storage or a high-lift door, and it is very quiet. It does require a torsion spring system and usually costs more.
Features worth having
- Battery backup so you can open the door during a power outage, which is useful during Houston storm season.
- Smartphone control to open, close and check the door from anywhere.
- Rolling code security so remote signals cannot be copied.
- Soft start and stop for smoother, quieter operation and less wear on the door.
Repair or replace the opener?
Logic boards, gears, sensors and remotes can often be repaired. If the opener is more than 10 to 15 years old, lacks safety sensors, or keeps failing, replacement is usually the better value. Not sure why your door is acting up? Start with our guide on why a garage door will not close.
